I still maintain that I have the coolest, most amazing, most gratifying job in the world. I get to make art with a camera while capturing the most important moments of peoples lives. How cool is that? As a photographer, I’ve always talked about the importance of photographs but because it’s my business and my livelihood, I think it’s easy for me to lose sight of what the images really mean. A regular day on the job can include photographing the birth of a baby, a newborn’s precious sleep smile, a 1 year old throwing cake or a two year old throwing a tantrum. Maybe my day is a young family, a newly engaged couple or a bride and groom’s first kiss. These are the moments that matter most and I am so honored to be a part of all of these family’s stories – great and small, happy and sad. I have been trusted with something so amazing.
My Grandmother passed away three weeks ago today and it’s really just sinking in that she’s gone. She was very special to me and her passing has been painful. I was so fortunate to be able to rearrange my schedule and fly home to St. Louis to attend her funeral and be with my family as we grieved the loss of a tremendous woman. I put together a slideshow of her life in pictures and it took me all week to finish! There were so many images of her! It was incredible to go through her life’s photographs and watch her grow from a little girl into a young woman, a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother. It really hit me how important these photographs are. When I look at the images of her and I together, I can almost hear her laugh. I can almost feel her hand squeezing my knee as I rode beside her in the car. I can almost smell her perfume and I can feel the emotions of the moments that those images captured. I’m so glad I have all these photographs of her to hold onto.
So, take lots and lots and tons of pictures. Have your pictures taken with your kids, your grandkids, and everyone you hold dear because these are the things that matter most. These are the irreplaceable things, the irreplaceable moments that can be cherished and loved always.
